This is a new build house which was therefore well insulated. We have recently retrofitted it with an air source heat pump replacing the gas boiler. This is complemented by 9.2 kWp solar PV and a 10 kWh battery. An EV charger was also fitted at the same time. We have also installed a rain planter and several water butts to reduce the impact of rainwater runoff from our property.
This house has:
More Detail
The integrated system of heat-pump, solar, battery and charger was designed and installed by Good Energy.
The heat pump is a Midea MHC-V4W/D2N8-B with 4.2 kW heating capacity (rated input 2.3 kW). Although the heat pump replaced a gas boiler in this Bellway-built home, no radiators needed to be changed, only the hot water cylinder. The refrigerant is 1.4 kg of R32 which is an HFC with a 100 year Global Warming Potential of 675 and an Ozone depletion potential of 0.
The PV installation uses a Solar Edge inverter and a DC-coupled Tesla 10kWh battery mounted outside. It is a fairly large solar array: 21 x 440W panels, 14 facing West and 7 facing East, using all the available roof space on the house.
Excess generation on a sunny day can be used by the heat pump before being exported to the grid. The home can be powered from the battery for a period if there is a power cut.
