Our house was the first passivhaus plus registered in Wiltshire.
- PASSIVHAUS design
- Timber frame
- Air Source Heat Pump for hot water & underfloor heating (hardly ever needed)
- Triple glazing
- Excellent insulation, 100% of loft space is insulated
- Mechanical Ventilation & Heat Recovery MVHR brings in fresh air pre-heated by air extracted from bathrooms & kitchen
- Solar PV panels for all day energy - 16 east and 20 west facing
- Solar battery (we generate & export as much as we import using Octopus Agile tariff)
- Low power & LED lighting
- Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV)
NB we sometimes have a large very lively and friendly guide dog puppy in training at the house.
Over 15 years we retofitted our previous house in Kent with cavity wall insulation, double glazing, a conservatory warmer roof, LED lights, solar thermal panels to heat hot water tank, solar PV panels to charge EV and earn feed-in-tarriff, water butts and then replaced a gas boiler with an ASHP using green grants and changing 2 radiators. These all worked well for us.
When we decided to move to Wiltshire our house sold for a very good price and was greatly in demand after an open weekend led to 10+ viewings and 7-8 offers. We only looked at one house to move to - as it was a passivhaus being built, so even more eco than our previous house. Before the house was finished we upgraded to add additional solar PV panels and a solar battery.
These allow us to lower our carbon footprint, generate and use low cost or free electricity [or at times when we are paid to take surplus power from the grid]. The MVHR and great insulation are a game changer in keeping the house warm by retaining the heat generated by sunlight, bodies, dog, showers, towel rail and kitchen use - so no heat is wasted but we get fresh air 24/7 which is better for respiratory health issues.
