Due to serious concern about the climate emergency – compounded by the volatile state of the energy market – I decided to switch to green, renewable energy as soon as possible. I could not afford to install solar in time to get the feed-in tariff, but by the time I was able to invest in 2020, technology had moved on and I was able to get panels plus a battery and inverter, so can trade with the grid (done by my supplier) as well as reduce my own costs by using my own energy. The panels look great, the inverter is in the loft, and the battery in a cupboard under the stairs, so not intrusive. I left British Gas – and had our gas supply disconnected – and moved to Social Energy.

In 2021, I was finally able to afford an air-source heat pump, installed by Igloo, who were brilliant. It has been a pleasure to use, isn't noisy at all - my biggest concern - and is simple to control via app or manually. Igloo were taken over by Good Energy recently - a 100% renewable energy supplier based in Chippenham, Wiltshire. As Social Energy collapsed during the fuel crisis, I have now switched to Good Energy entirely, and they have been a pleasure to deal with. They service the ASHP annually (£250 approx) and provide technical support at all other times. They also handle grid transactions. Whiteparish has a terrible signal, so this is done via meter readings rather than through the smart meter at present.
